VQLS is focused on solving a system of linear algebraic equations. The breakthrough algorithm for solving the quantum linear system problem by Harrow, Hassidim, and Lloyd (so-called HHL) offered an exponential speedup over the best classical algorithms. On near-term intermediate scale quantum (NISQ) devices, HHL is limited to small numbers of equations e.g. 2×2 systems. VQLS is a brand new VQA focused on solving the quantum linear systems problem on NISQ devices. Recently, it was used on actual hardware (superconducting qubits) to solve 1024×1024 system.
